BirdLab is a free citizen science application designed to validate scientific hypotheses through player participation.
The concept is straightforward: for a duration of five minutes, players replicate the arrivals and departures of birds at two real feeders that they set up side by side in a garden, balcony, or terrace.
BirdLab serves as a playful application of a scientific protocol developed by researchers from the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle and AgroParisTech.
How to participate and contribute to science:
- Construct two identical feeders for your garden, terrace, or balcony using tutorials available in the app.
- Learn to identify the 26 most common bird species through a training quiz designed for beginners, amateurs, and seasoned birdwatchers. Descriptive sheets provide additional information on the species you observe.
- Initiate the game and identify, in real-time over five minutes, the birds that visit your feeders. The data collected is invaluable and directly contributes to scientific research by helping researchers better understand bird behavior.
- BirdLab runs during the winter months, from mid-November to the end of March. You can share your statistics with friends and invite new players to join. The more you play, the greater your contribution to science.
Your observations assist in studying how different bird species interact at the feeders, whether they avoid or associate with each other. The larger the dataset of observations, the more researchers can advance knowledge in this area.
